WARP

Jack Macrae

Horizon Festival

25 August - 2 September 2023

WARP is a Jack MacRae exhibition, presenting in an old abandoned jail.

An explosion of distilled geometric forms, Jack’s new body of work takes on an expanded painting practice — rationalised, brutalised, explored, and expanded.

Born from solitary, WARP is a raw, lost-in-thought and hopeful portrayal of what’s to come. Lock yourself in and throw away the key.

WARP will launch on the opening night of the festival, right after the Opening Ceremony at Cotton Tree. So, once the festival has launched, scurry down the road to The Old Lock-up (IN ari) for a night of vinyl, beverages, good times, and an exclusive artist talk with the artist, Jack MacRae — hosted by Ruby Donohoe.

The exhibition, itself, will run for the opening weekend — and all rooms within The Old Lock-up will be explored.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Jack Macrae | @hell_ripper_boy_jack

Jack MacRae is an emerging artist from the Sunshine Coast/ Kabi Kabi Country. His work reveals a clear focus on investigating colour, form, technique and materials. He deftly creates hand-cut collages using coloured paper as well as abstract, hardedge colourfield paintings. His art is rationalised to its purest and simplest forms.

These forms and shapes intersect with bold planes of colour in his large landscape paintings that offer a flattened perspective of the world, or through the depths of layering colours in big bold circles. Jack distils colours, sensations and moods from his expeditions to produce dream-like works that beckon with their hard lines and soft curves. An exploration of autonomy, materiality, scale and space is key to Jack’s practice and his hand-cut collages are skilful examples of this.

Jack brings his studies in architecture to his art making and although he has only recently commenced regularly exhibiting his paintings, they are quickly receiving acclaim.

This event is presented as part of Horizon Festival 2023, the Sunshine Coast’s leading multi-arts festival. Get lost in 10 days of must-see art, music, culture events and more, from the coast to the hinterland.
