ABSURD / SELF | Nicholas Tossmann

18 -26 June 2022

Nicholas Tossmann’s practice investigates his experience of being a conceptual artist as part of his philosophical search of self and purpose. He explores these ideas methodically by analysing and questioning his art practice, which involves the process of researching, making and critically reflecting. Text, diagrams and mapping are utilized as a self-reflexive approach to art making, often taking the form of performance, installation and moving image. Tossmann's work offers an insight into his oscillating sense of purpose through practice. His work invites a contemplation of the expansive potential of art to question our purpose.

“The absurd refers to one’s inherent need to find meaning in life despite there being no certainty in any meaning. The self is everything that makes us up. It is the combination of what we choose to be and what is inherent to us. Everything we experience is inevitably through the lens of ourselves.”
